<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When this is how a day starts, how can it not be good? Compliments of Maui.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm off today, and certainly will need a couple cups of this to get through my list of things to do! On the to do list:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Finish all my charts</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Prep and start painting my storm door, front door, and frame</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Mow the lawn</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Get a new drivers license (lost mine in Hawaii... whoops)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Go for a run</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Do my laundry</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Play poker</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Off to start the list!</div>

Apologies for the extended absence; the end of intern year was busy. And then I just decided to take a break and do other things. But now I'm back, with what will be random posts about whatever I feel like talking about.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicf0huXsbzfdIiuvlrH3KjDdpTb8NeLDaeRY_5KUyf0UksjdCEbqKigmQmSmLdANDmyKd4ToqpPPB83cE6KsWYzZnxVCTId4AUw7NOz9-t9oIENjGMW_h1u_mTx5RO2Sic8zdwT-Dq_N8/s1600/Light+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicf0huXsbzfdIiuvlrH3KjDdpTb8NeLDaeRY_5KUyf0UksjdCEbqKigmQmSmLdANDmyKd4ToqpPPB83cE6KsWYzZnxVCTId4AUw7NOz9-t9oIENjGMW_h1u_mTx5RO2Sic8zdwT-Dq_N8/s400/Light+3.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Today that happens to be lights.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
About a month ago, I installed some outdoor speakers on my deck. Because of where the power source is, the speakers ended up being directly above the lights on my deck.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
As you can see in this picture, 1) the speakers crowd the lights, and 2) the lights are old. Like really really old. They still work just fine, and I originally was going to just repaint them. But once the speakers were installed, I decided that I needed lights that hang down rather than point up, to give a little more space between them and the speakers. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
After some online searching, I narrowed it down to a couple options. I was looking for:</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
1) Outdoor lighting (duhhh)</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
2) Copper/bronze/ORB finish (not black)</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
3) 15" size (ish)</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
4) Hardwired</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Pretty easy criteria to fulfill. When I actually went to the store to pick them up, one of the styles I liked looked a little chincy. So I ended up going with this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPjMS_piky909Hbz22r1gWnkQMG5fWTOZCEK68L5c9WnwuY8CqkHLWShTtT0TzKCYqpXUdyTD_OQZv4q1GYcThC4vJf-R6dfTFw2jsuQzD-KxmJkPuUurR30LlkPCh-rhmvTNp1T8edBU/s1600/Light+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPjMS_piky909Hbz22r1gWnkQMG5fWTOZCEK68L5c9WnwuY8CqkHLWShTtT0TzKCYqpXUdyTD_OQZv4q1GYcThC4vJf-R6dfTFw2jsuQzD-KxmJkPuUurR30LlkPCh-rhmvTNp1T8edBU/s320/Light+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
It got a smidge complicated from there. When I took the old ones down, I realized that they didn't leave me a whole lot of slack to connect the wires. But eventually I got it done (just before dark), and the new lights look way better!</div>

It was getting dark by the time I finished, so I have yet to get a decent picture. But they look much less cramped next to the speakers, and not nearly as old and run down as the old ones. And they still give off plenty of light!</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
And best of all, I didn't electrocute myself while playing with wires...</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd say it's a win.</div>

The guilty pleasure of the evening is RepoGames. It is fantastic. <br />

Then, every time I tried to get on my blog, it made my internet stop working. I have no idea why. Our tech guy is working on it. For now, I come to you from a loaner computer. <br />
<br />
I've made enough progress on my "secret" project to give you a little update. There are still some finishing touches that need to be put on, but I'm not sure when they'll get done, so here ya go! We left off with this...<br />

Almost... I still have to put his name and house number (yes, I do realize how ridiculous I am) on it, and add the trim (which has already been painted). I really need a miter saw to do the job correctly... <br />
<br />
So there you have it... my first (and second) attempt at dog house construction. The first one I started that was too small is going to another dog (who will fit better inside). If being a doctor doesn't work out, I could probably make a career of making dog houses...<br />
<br />
I think I'll stick to doctoring.Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-78121658482233941122012-04-16T17:26:00.000-04:002012-04-16T17:26:58.480-04:00Formatting ParalysisWhen I was in college, we worked on a lot of biochemistry lab reports and papers in pairs. We divided the responsibilities, and mine usually included formatting the paper. This involved playing tables and images, deciding on the number of columns, layout of the title, colors, paragraph headings, etc. And, invariably, no matter how early we started working on any given paper, we were ALWAYS up at 4 AM the night before it was due, perfecting things. And I was always tinkering with formatting. And by tinkering, I mean obsessing. And by obsessing, I mean yelling at the computer, throwin goldfish at it, getting a high squeaky voice, and sometimes cursing (gasp!). Amy, Tom, anyone wanna back me up on this??? Formating was the bain of my existance, but when it was done and right, it was the difference between a crap paper and a work of biochemical beauty. <br />
<br />
I'm heading to Atlanta for the American Society of Sports Medicine annual meeting soon, and am working on a poster to present there as we speak. I have about half of the text written. But I can't do more because I CAN'T PICK A COLOR SCHEME!!!! You'd think that would be the least of my worries, given that I need to have it done by, say, tonight. But I have to get it right! <br />
<br />
The writing part it pretty easy, and ultimately pretty worthless. Being as I've been to many a poster presentation sessions before, I have an idea of how they work. People walk up to your poster (because it's beautifully formatted, and stands out), then read the title, and then say, "Huh, interesting. Tell me about your case". And then you tell them while their eyes glance over the colors and pictures and any words you put in bold and/or red. <br />
<br />
In reality, all that really matters is the formatting. And having an interesting case to start with that people want to hear more about. <br />
<br />
I'm off to sort through more potential colors... I'm on green and blue right now... it's a possibility.Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-670719411083736222012-04-15T19:29:00.000-04:002012-04-15T19:29:37.651-04:00Tough Mudder RecapThis weekend, I and 6 other residents ventured to Cleveland, OH to take part in the Ohio/Michigan Tough Mudder. Never heard of the Tough Mudder? Check it out at <a href="http://www.toughmudder.com/">http://www.toughmudder.com/</a>! Basically, it's a 10-12 mile (I think ours was about 11) military style obstacle course with over 20 obstacles including walls, ice baths, barbed wire, and electric shocks.<br />
<br />
We all drove out the night before because, really, who wants to wake up, drive 4 hours, then run 11 miles? No one, that's who. <br />
<br />
The forecast was overcast, high of 60, and chance of rain. 60 sounds nice, until you are trying to warm up after jumping in a sub-freezing fluorescent colored ice bath. Then it sounds cold. <br />
<br />
The instructions told us to arrive at the parking lot 2 hours before our scheduled start time. That sounded a little excessive, but we did it and we glad we did! The line for the buses to take us to the course was HUGE. They had school buses in groups of 5 shuttling people the 15 minutes from the parking lot (of a huge factory of some sort) to the course. There, were proceeded to check in, get marked with our numbers, check in bags, and try to warm up. Then it was a short climb over the first of many walls to the start line... (yes, you had to climb a wall just to get to the start...)<br />
<br />
Then we huddled with about 600 other people in our wave, said the Tough Mudder oath, and were off! To summarize the next 4 hours, it went a little like this...<br />
<br />
Run through mud.<br />
Climb over something.<br />
Run through water.<br />
Jump 25 feet off a platform in to water.<br />
Go through a tube. <br />
Climb over something slippery.<br />
Get electrocuted<br />
Run through mud<br />
Climb over something<br />
Crawl under something.<br />
Run through water.<br />
Climb over walls.<br />
Run through mud.<br />
Get electrocuted.<br />
Finish.<br />
<br />
Here's the evidence that there was mud!<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There was DEFINITELY team work required. <br />
Today, it snowed.<br />
<br />
Huh?<br />
<br />
Granted, they were just flurries, didn't stick, and the ground didn't even get wet. But, STILL. It was cold enough for water to fall frozen, from the sky. Not acceptable for April. I'm already in spring mode and that's how I want to stay. I think it's supposed to warm up by this weekend. Hopefully this cold snap will break and all falling water from here on out will be melted. <br />
<br />
And since I slacked and didn't post on Sunday or Monday, I will give you a once sentence synopsis of the last two days...<br />

His name is Jake.) a little more freedom at night and when I'm out running errands. So I took a jaunt to Lowe's (like my 5th of the day) and the grocery store, and left Jake out on his own. I came home to this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSRR7Rq3jvf5U5pH-u3hA0DF31VatR6l1Foj7Y02k58fs7Lh-1LS8wy6SGT-fvBnruGGUGrB-eAAlScAqsdbKGhUQsZFISuAIYawfHWGePuJQaEDB-Dm_D_lr69dovHeH9UayGDQf7o4Y/s1600/Jake+Alone.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSRR7Rq3jvf5U5pH-u3hA0DF31VatR6l1Foj7Y02k58fs7Lh-1LS8wy6SGT-fvBnruGGUGrB-eAAlScAqsdbKGhUQsZFISuAIYawfHWGePuJQaEDB-Dm_D_lr69dovHeH9UayGDQf7o4Y/s1600/Jake+Alone.gif" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhav_XCE9W-njE41e-TbyYUHTvkJAMN5xt7F8_p0sGqrL4bcT1OBS6_FZB_R4gslgJ1nBsSpokd4MabwnXuJjNQnZhg0mgbilOEUgRtwSUXmOq13WwifonJnlZfiqgj8IzOYr3SfRwJung/s1600/Jake+Alone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhav_XCE9W-njE41e-TbyYUHTvkJAMN5xt7F8_p0sGqrL4bcT1OBS6_FZB_R4gslgJ1nBsSpokd4MabwnXuJjNQnZhg0mgbilOEUgRtwSUXmOq13WwifonJnlZfiqgj8IzOYr3SfRwJung/s400/Jake+Alone.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

In this picture is a pair of pants, two books (one mine, one Tina's), a couch cushion, and a shoe. There is also a dog toy, but that's not unusual. NOT pictured are a pair of scrub pants, the other shoe, and a Save the Date card.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Needless to say, there won't be any more freedom of the whole house for Jake for a little while. I think he was trying to exercise his herding skills, but had no live animals so resorted to inanimate household objects. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And, if you're wondering what this Jake character looks like, here ya go! This was a picture on Petfinder before I got him.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I spent most of the day outside trimming trees and working more on my secret project... I have no more pictures, but I can tell you that out of about a million swings of the hammer, I did whack my finger once. It hurt. And I also bought a circular saw. Not one, but TWO people asked me (the check out guy at Lowe's and the Starbucks guy at the drive through window) if I was actually going to use it myself. For the record, yes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Intern year is now officially 10/13ths over. In medicine, it's important to be precise.<br />
<br />
I also head to the wonderful world of non-call block starting tomorrow. Meaning no call, free weekends, upcoming vacation, and not very many late nights. It's gonna be awesome. I've got a lot to do in that time... here's whats on the list for this weekend.<br />
<br />
Finish secret project<br />
Paint kitchen ceiling and hallway<br />
Paint deck lights<br />
Trim giant tree in front yard<br />
Pick up stones and plant grass along fence<br />
Weed<br />
Pull up old bushes<br />
Plant new bushes<br />
Hang pictures<br />
Do laundry<br />
Finish poster for presentation<br />
<br />
That shouldn't take much time......Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-44419551214660229452012-04-05T21:43:00.000-04:002012-04-05T21:43:58.671-04:00Golden DayEvery once in a while on a call block, we get this beautiful thing called a golden day. It means you're not on call, and you don't have clinic, so all you have to do is see your patients, go to noon conference, and pretend to be normal. It's a glorious thing. Today was a golden day. And it went a little like this...<br />
<br />
530: Wake up.<br />
540: Wake up again. Take shower.<br />
615: Go to work.<br />
815: Go to breakfast.<br />
1045: Finish seeing patients.<br />
1100: Admit new nursing home patient.<br />
1200: Noon conference.<br />
100: Go home and clean.<br />
200: Drywall man comes to fix hole in ceiling.<br />
300: Nap.<br />
330: Lowes to get paint, wood, grass seed, a shovel, curtains, floor samples, nails, and other stuff.<br />
530: Eat dinner and drink iced coffee.<br />
600: Cut up big fallen branch with saw.<br />
615: Build secret project... well, part of it.<br />
730: Unload dishwasher and clean basement.<br />
800: Learn to use new leaf blower.<br />
900: Book hotel room for Tough Mudder.<br />
<br />
And now, it is time to watch HGTV and go to bed. I lead an exciting life. But first, a glimpse of my secret project...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikRxZ_5fJR1y39ZsNROgOEpSDsDbJYDkqgf8WgqeNwwuFXDOpIIvrJ0QTBI79oDAHzsXtjA-8VI6_3gtfP0CRDOstMcQ__JXaSppXLbAutyspRHA1uTVNjIFAOHSgE_rJLCCmQJ41EWgs/s1600/Dog+House+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikRxZ_5fJR1y39ZsNROgOEpSDsDbJYDkqgf8WgqeNwwuFXDOpIIvrJ0QTBI79oDAHzsXtjA-8VI6_3gtfP0CRDOstMcQ__JXaSppXLbAutyspRHA1uTVNjIFAOHSgE_rJLCCmQJ41EWgs/s400/Dog+House+1.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyone wanna guess what it is??</div>Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-75126133000200304502012-04-04T16:28:00.000-04:002012-04-04T16:28:21.300-04:00Blinking Cursor SyndromeI think we've all experienced Blinking Cursor Syndrome. When you have something to write, want to write, and all you can do is look at the cursor on the screen, hoping that the words will magically appear. But they don't.<br />
<br />
Well, that's what this blog has become for me over the last few months. I would say that I've just been too busy to write anything, but that's not true. It doesn't take that long to write a post, whether it's about medicine or anything else. I think the problem is that I always want to be profound, interesting, and engaging. Which is admirable... but some days just don't have that in them. And I feel like this blog is supposed to be about me and my life in residency, which should involve a whole lot of writing about actually being a doctor because thats how I spend most of my time. But so many of my posts this year have been about other stuff that I stopped writing all together because I felt like it wasn't an accurate portrayal of what my life looks like. <br />
<br />
So, here's the deal.<br />
<br />
I'm just going to write something every day. About something. And post it. The more I write, the easier it is to write. So I'm going to ban the blinking cursor and just put some words on the screen. Maybe a picture or two... <br />
<br />
Bear with me and hopefully something good will pop up now and then.<br />
<br />
Peace out,<br />

Basically, you hang out at the state capitol and treat another with urgent or emergent medical problems. There's a little medical office with supplies and an exam table, and you get a pager so you're not tied to the office if there aren't any patients to see. <br />
<br />
Things were relatively slow that day medicine wise, so we spent most of the day wandering around the capitol and eating free breakfast from the Indiana Soybean Alliance. No, really, the ISA provided a delicious (non-soy based) breakfast for Senators, Representatives, their staff, and apparently a couple of "you don't look old enough to be a" doctors. Go figure. Drug companies can't provide free pens because they might skew our prescribing practices, but the Indiana Soybean Alliance (and about 100 other interest groups) can provide free breakfast, and maybe some informational pamphlets, to our lawmakers. Hypocracy if you ask me. And yes, I did take an ISA pen off the table.<br />
<br />
Anyway, part of being Physician of the Day is that you are introduced in both the House and Senate when they convene. The Senate's meeting for that day lasted about 2 minutes, and sounded more like an auction than lawmaking. But it was certainly interesting! Our stint in the House was a little more dramatic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">But prior to the drama, we capitalized on a photo op...</div> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

So, one of the perks of being POD is that you actually get to stay on the floor of the House (or Senate) while they're in session. Really no one other than the Representatives, the occasional staff member, and the Minister of the Day get to do that. Normally, I'm sure that's a pretty pointless perk. There's a gallery that any Joe Schmoe off the street can sit in and overlook the session... and the day we were there, there were a LOT of Joe Schmoe's sitting up there, as well as a lot standing outside the doors of the House. We just so happen to have come on a day that the house was voting on "Right to Work" legislation, which deals with whether or not an employee can be required to be a member of a union. I don't really get unions all that well, so I don't have a great opinion of this legislation. I do know that a LOT of people were very worked up about it. Looking at the debate (which lasted about 4 hours that day, involved a fair bit of yelling, chanting, and some stories that made absolutely no sense), in the pure sense of a debate, I would say the republicans (who wrote the legislsation) won, hands down. <br />
<br />
Either way, it passed, to later be voted on by the senate and signed by the govenor. It was very exciting.<br />
<br />
I think this was a slightly atypical day as POD, given the high profile legislation that was being voted on. However, I still think it was a cool opportunity and would love to do it again!<br />
<br />
Peace out, <br />
Kari<br />

All fall, I was looking for a pair of winter boots since I was told there' lots-o-snow up here near Lake Michigan. Pretty much the only specification was something that will keep my feet warm and dry without weighting 47 lbs. I ended up with the <a href="http://www.sorel.com/SUKA%E2%84%A2-II-%7C-265-%7C-5/803298502221,default,pd.html">Sorel Suka II</a>. <br />

They were awesome. They absolutely kept my feet warm and dry. They have clasps on the side and there's no lining covering the gap, but once they were all closed up, no snow snuck in (like I was afraid might happen). I also wore then all over town for two days because it was snowy and slushy, and got a couple complements on them. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They are super comfy, easily fit my jeans when I tucked them in, and are a cinch to get in and out of. I knew from the start that I wanted Sorel's (high quality, great durability, really warm). From what I've heard, pretty much any boot of theirs will do the job, but I thought these were kind of unique and interesting, without sacrificing function! And boy to I love function...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Wyatt sees thrilled, doesn't he?<br />
<br />
I have a tale to tell you... a tale about my Christmas tree. I REALLY wanted to get a real tree from a Christmas tree farm, cut down with my own two hands (and a saw, of course). That planned flopped a couple times, and on the last day I was going to try to get there, I had a water pipe leak in the ceiling and instead of a Christmas tree, I got a plumber. Wop wop. <br />
<br />
I didn't want a fake tree because we always had a real one at home, I love the way they smell, and I just wanted one. But in the end, I decided I'd rather have a fake tree than no tree at all... so I broke down and bought one. It didn't hurt that I waited long enough for them to be 50% off either... <br />
<br />
Even though my tree is nothing special, I needed something to hang my ornaments on... because they ARE special. Some people pick a theme for their tree, and totally change the look each year. My tree's theme is "I've been getting ornaments every year since I was born and I want to show them off". It's the theme I use every year. I got a bunch of them from home this year (although not all, I'm sure), and added some simple blue and silver balls to fill it up. Here are a few of my favorite ornaments...<br />

That make it challenging (ie impossible) to make it home to PA for Christmas. <br />
<br />
The good news: I got this stocking in a box of presents from my parents today...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVOVy3MgMad7a-AMrWWy0RFv4l855q4AZGZOG8v7Qf75aYWxLRD1YepRFhO_ZM5iHTX4Z-GZ6J7HTRB9OGRcEBBKsvJNF1cEhllHAwx87g0NaNEGW317nIq6pwoGHghUxAYcaZzK07HR8/s1600/Stocking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVOVy3MgMad7a-AMrWWy0RFv4l855q4AZGZOG8v7Qf75aYWxLRD1YepRFhO_ZM5iHTX4Z-GZ6J7HTRB9OGRcEBBKsvJNF1cEhllHAwx87g0NaNEGW317nIq6pwoGHghUxAYcaZzK07HR8/s640/Stocking.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
Why, yes, that is a stocking made out of a paper bag with actual stitching filled with Christmas goodies. Thank you for asking. <br />
<br />
At home, I have a hand-made cross stitched stocking that I've had since... forever. Being as it's at home in PA and I am in IN, I couldn't hang it from my mantle. So I got a cheapo sustitute. And then I got this one.<br />
<br />
The paper bag stocking is WAY better than my replacement. A little taste of home (the peanut butter balls I got in the same box also taste a lot like home...) even though I can be there.<br />
<br />
Thanks mom and dad! For the stocking and other presents I haven't opened because it's not Christmas yet and that would be cheating!<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas!<br />

Lots and lots of files. I hadn't put ANYTHING away since moving 6 months ago, and decided it was high time I find my desk under a small tropical forest's worth of paper. Mission: accomplished.</em><br />
<br />
<em>In all the wading, I stumbled upon lots of old things I hadn't read in a long time. Letter from friends, cards, old graded papers and tests. Among those things, I also found my AMCAS application for med school. I submitted that application on 8/5/2005, just after my 20th birthday and shortly before starting my junior year in college. In the 6+ years since writing it, lots has changed. And lots hasn't. I was only halfway through college when I wrote this personal statement, thinking I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, traveling the world, figuring out who I was. I actually wrote it on a plane flying home from South Africa, using a little journal of handmade paper that only halfway opened, and a red pen. I thought about writing a big analysis of how my life is now compared to what I expected of myself back then, but I decided it would be more fun to just throw it out there and let you all make your own judgements. Enjoy... </em><br />
<br />
<em>(ps... I didn't edit this at all, even though I wanted to change some grammar and wording. That would have been cheating...)</em><br />
<br />
In his book, "God Has a Dream", Bishop Desmond Tutu writes about a way of thinking known as Ubuntu theology. He claims that all people are connected, that "I am because you are." This summer, I had the opportunity to travel to the small country of Lesotho in southern Africa. It was in Lesotho that the meaning of Tutu's theology challenged by dreams for my future.<br />
<br />
During evening discussions, the students and I questioned one another in hopes of understanding our experiences. I struggled with the injustices of the poverty I witnessed that threatened the lives of my new-found friends. If Tutu is right, and "I am because you are", what is my role in changing the injustice facing humanity? What can I be to help the "you"'s of the world in their individual struggles?<br />
<br />
When I first thought about these questions, my nicely planned life was rapidly turned upside down. I thought that in order to be the person Lesotho and its people inspired me to be, I would have to make some frightening, dramatic, and unknown shifts in my future plans. The impact the people of Lesotho, their stories, and their reality had on me was unfathomable. I participated in a worship service with over 300 people, momentarily oblivious to the fact that, statistically, over thirty percent of them were HIV positive, and most made less than $300 a year. <br />
<br />
Reflecting on these realities, I began to question my own path, my own future. I could not continue to be ignorant or apathetic to the plights of those with whom I share this world. I took on a hemisphere's responsibility in a single evening and did not know what to do or where to start. My mind and heart wrestled with Tutu's, "I am because you are". What if I am the "you are"? Do my thoughts, decisions, and actions directly impact human reality? Is the status of each orphaned child and homeless family in Lesotho a result of who I am? The lives of real people across the world may rest on my incapable shoulders. I struggled with how to handle that realization.<br />
<br />
I could not at first see how my pursuit of a career in medicine fit into this quest for justice. I didn't know how living out my dream of being a surgeon could balance the equation of the Ubuntu theology. But as I began to explore the possible meanings of Tutu's words, I came to the realization that they are fighting words, a challenge calling every person to the responsible for the whole of humanity. "I am because you are." The wrongs of the world can only be changed by magnifying and utilizing the individual gifts of every person. We, as members of a global community, are blessed with gifts as diverse as the people who possess them, ans as important as the power that provides them. These gifts allow Ubuntu theology to work. If I am who I was meant to be, you can be who you were meant to be.<br />
<br />
In an ideal world, people would discover, understand, and utilize their gifts to the highest potential. However, this world is far from ideal. Some are not given the opportunity to be who they are meant to be. The injustices and inequalities of life in Lesotho and many other countries across the globe stifle the unique potential of each human being. Simply being born in a certain place robs them of a choice, traps them in the life of generations before them. at the same time, equally gifted men and women take their opportunities and choices for granted, and sacrifice their gifts for prestige, status, and appearance. In an ideal world, choice would be standard and injustice would be rare.<br />
<br />
I was faced with the sobering reality that my choices, these decisions about my life, were my chance to change the world. Ubuntu theology had led me, though on a disturbing and challenging path, directly back to that overturned life plan. Because I am who I am, I have a choice. And because I have a choice, I have a rare chance to embrace my gifts and make my life what if can be. My gift, my passion, is medicine.<br />
<br />
People have never been shy about telling me how they think I should life my life. I have been told I should be a teacher, paramedic, researcher, even a minister. While each of these vocations would utilize one of my abilities, they fail to capture all that I am and who I can be. My personality requires interaction with other people; an exchange of ideas and feelings and skills and hope. My mind craves constant challenge; technical and difficult, new and always changing. I am a problem solver; social, scientific, and personal. The only career, the only future, I can see for myself is medicine. While I was in Lesotho, I had a spontaneous desire to stay and make things right. However, sacrificing my passion and gifts for something more "helpful" or "righteous" might be as harmful as choosing to remain ignorant would have been. Where exactly medicine will take me is as uncertain as the future of Lesotho. But I do know that if "I am because you are", I am meant to be a physician. I cannot choose to ignore that gift.Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-89087111319506325652011-12-11T17:13:00.000-05:002011-12-11T17:13:55.887-05:00Storm Door DemoI was out putting up lights this afternoon. Last night I'd put a wreath up on the front door, but it was a little high and kind of hidden behind the screen part of the storm door. I planned on trying to move it to the front of the house where I was putting lights... if my ladder was tall enough.<br />
<br />
While I was putting up some lights, I got a good look at how the storm door was attached... Apparently with lots of screws. Huh. Doesn't seem to hard to get rid of...<br />
<br />
Lets revisit what my house looks like (in the spring...)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0ahD186fqAd967ZbV9NTQE3M1wzRDldQQaIQuGXa_peAj0Z5RArpL3k6_hitKdSmee66Wn3gSqrjnh2jOEEqgyvri9QZ2ilKKwYdla6As5iMUHDFmi-9p3FNRihVyBMpJFTuDX_AUo0/s1600/DSCN0246.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0ahD186fqAd967ZbV9NTQE3M1wzRDldQQaIQuGXa_peAj0Z5RArpL3k6_hitKdSmee66Wn3gSqrjnh2jOEEqgyvri9QZ2ilKKwYdla6As5iMUHDFmi-9p3FNRihVyBMpJFTuDX_AUo0/s400/DSCN0246.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've always wanted to paint the storm door because it stands out way more than a storm door should. You can't even tell there's a door behind it! So, when I saw how it was attached, I figured it couldn't be THAT hard to take down....</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">More than 20 screws later, after almost tearing the hinge off the door frame (whoops, forgot those screws), the door was down. Apparently, the door and trim used to be painted brown. I've got a little touching up to do. But overall, I'm THRILLED with how much it opens up the front of the house. It'll got back up in the spring (when I want to keep the front door open), but for now the front of my house is awkward-white free!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Check out the results...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I know it's kinda dark... tis the season. I should have turned the porch light on! When it warms up later this week, I'll putt out some sandpaper and paint and touch up the places that are brown now... it'll be good as new :)Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-54027032487202031552011-12-10T20:35:00.000-05:002011-12-10T20:35:07.522-05:00Camera CleanupI was cleaning up the memory card in my phone this weekend and came across some (okay, a lot) of random pictures of Wyatt. There was much pie eating and shopping and no time for computers. I thought I'd pop in with a little house updating since I haven't done that in a long time. Here are some shots of how my dining room has changed over the last 5 months...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I painted three walls chocolate brown with the front wall a light grey/beige color (that runs into the living room also). The big picture window in the front lets in enough natural light that it doesn't make the room to dark or feel small. After painting, the dining room became a great staging area for many many tools... and it looked like this.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNofvFY-2ANzxE_An-5rZvT4vi0SylSY76Ibz8yKBa6_BATiauTM94M6RiDs-9IKV-BIcXNPbpVSFhcZtMe2d1IkYPRui50lqW2BgKdgJZs0DcrWhcMxAOa3MMqDJ3ByUtVqK0Q-MEVLQ/s1600/DSCN0270.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNofvFY-2ANzxE_An-5rZvT4vi0SylSY76Ibz8yKBa6_BATiauTM94M6RiDs-9IKV-BIcXNPbpVSFhcZtMe2d1IkYPRui50lqW2BgKdgJZs0DcrWhcMxAOa3MMqDJ3ByUtVqK0Q-MEVLQ/s400/DSCN0270.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Take notice of the wonky lopsided light fixture seen above. That was one of the things I really wanted my dad to help me replace while he was here. I thought about refinishing it, but just couldn't get it to hang right and get the shades to sit level. I imagine a lot of the coming days will start with a trip to Lowes... Anyway, after getting a couple small projects done, we headed towards the Notre Dame stadium with plans to find some tickets to the game vs. Boston College. We were kind of anticipating a blowout by ND, but it's still fun to go! <br />
<br />
We walked up to some shoppes south of campus, and while my dad was in the bookstore, I scouted out the scalpers. They were buying tickets from people who had extras for like $5, and then trying to sell them for face value (at least $80)... Not happening. <br />
<br />
Instead we walked through the tailgates, and there was a kid selling extra tickets their family wasn't going to use. So we got the pair for less 50% of face value. Yay us.<br />
<br />
And then we went to the stadium, got some food, and found our seats. I got a hamburger with mashed potatoes on it. It's called a Legends burger, and it was practically invented for me.<br />
<br />
The game was much closer than expected. And there were a couple surprises. At some point, Jon Bon Jovi came out and was "directing the band" in the stands. I don't think there was much directing happening, but he was definitely there!<br />
<br />
At halftime, the band did normally does a halftime show, but this week they decided it would be cooler to make up a whole new show to songs made famous by Chicago... and they thought it would also be cool to have Chicago there to sing along...<br />

</tbody></table> I think the most impressive part was that the band learned a whole new show just for this day. <br />
<br />
And then, during the second half, my dad bought me $5 hot chocolate. He must love me, because that's a lot for hot chocolate... but it was cold and I didn't bring gloves. It made me warm.<br />
<br />
Day 1 of vacation ended with us walking home, meeting up with someone he knows from work at Corby's (a bar) for a bit, then getting pizza at 11 at night.<br />

Day 1: Success.Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-48846394299498310782011-11-18T14:54:00.000-05:002011-11-18T14:54:19.352-05:00SkillzToday is the last day of OB. Tomorrow is the first day of vacation. 10 glorious days of vacaton. I'm excited. <br />
<br />
Various family members are coming to my house over the next couple days. And I plan on putting them all to work. Don't worry, they kind of volunteered. Knd of...<br />
<br />
You see, they have skillz. Skillz far beyond mine. My dad has building skillz and wiring skillz and plumbing skillz. My mom has decorating skillz and ironing skillz, and being creative skillz. And I happen to have lots of thing on my to do list that I am not equiped to do. I sent my dad a list of LOTS of possible projects so he could bring proper tools. <br />
<br />
I have big plans.<br />
<br />
Be on the lookout for pictures of cool stuff.Karihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05343746457817241198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832832638577110208.post-84162131530249891182011-11-13T18:22:00.000-05:002011-11-13T18:22:29.807-05:00Gear: Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman JacketHave I mentioned before I have a jacket problem? I think I have... but it never hurts to repeat important things.<br />
<br />
I have a jacket problem. <br />
<br />
As in, I have too many of them, but just can't stop. Seriously, I am one person, and my coat closet it totally crammed. But they are all so important. And none is more important than my Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZriiRun8FeQN5v97U3p_m8kjs2ZOEUDtiTl07uDyMv437Kzf719sG-cn6YNreMWfCHjA9rWh-eJIuE4YhLo9a0D_lOpMon7gUto5iOnI4vj_sE84NIoilWwCEVN-lyomKR0Cum3Qw7E/s1600/MH+Monkey+Jacket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZriiRun8FeQN5v97U3p_m8kjs2ZOEUDtiTl07uDyMv437Kzf719sG-cn6YNreMWfCHjA9rWh-eJIuE4YhLo9a0D_lOpMon7gUto5iOnI4vj_sE84NIoilWwCEVN-lyomKR0Cum3Qw7E/s400/MH+Monkey+Jacket.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Okay, fine. I have two. You didn't have to be so mean about it.<br />
<br />
Let me explain. I have had my eye on this jacket since I worked at <a href="http://www.ems.com/">EMS</a>. It was love at first wear. But, being that I am relatively cheap (ie, like to get things at a bargain), and it retails for $150, I didn't own one. I only oogled. That is, until one fateful day in Portland, OR. I was on a bit of a Columbia outlet store shopping spree, when I came across this particular jacket on sale for 50% off! Woo! But I was Christmas shopping for OTHER people, not me. So I was going to let it pass on by. Until I saw a sign indicating that it was marked down even more, to a mere $40. I'm only human, people. And that deal is beyond my ability to pass up. So I snagged it (only it was blue, not purple like the one above), and promptly wore it around Portland, and on the airplane home (and I may or may not have let my apartment temp run a little cool so I had an excuse to wear it while sitting on the couch......).<br />
<br />
The other day, while on a bit of a TJ Maxx shopping spree (I don't do that as often as it sounds), I found the purple version you see above, stuffed between some other inferior jackets and hiding from the masses, waiting for me. And, of course, it was at a great TJ Maxx price. What's a girl to do??<br />
<br />
Yes, I already said I have a problem.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I am not opposed to owning two of these jackets because, quite simply, they are wonderful, and double the wonderful never hurt anyone...<br />
<br />
Why, you may ask, is the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman jacket so great? Well, first of all, the <a href="http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Women%27s-Monkey-Woman%E2%84%A2-Jacket/OL3342,default,pd.html">product description</a> on MH's website says it's constructed of Monkey Phur. How can it not be great? Aside from that, I love this jacket because it's incredibly soft and warm while being light weight and nifty looking. The fleece tapers at the cuff so the Monkey Phur doesn't get all up in whatever you're doing with your hands. It has a convenient zip breast pocket (always a plus in my mind... the best place to put a few dollars and some chap stick while frolicking in any winter wonderland), a feminine cut, and did I mention it's warm? The fleece also holds up extremely well to abuse without pulling out or pilling. <br />
<br />
It's like getting a giant warm hug from an extremely friendly brightly colored polar bear.<br />
<br />
The downside to this jacket, like most fleece jackets, is that it doesn't do so hot in the wind protection department. It'll keep you warm if it's cold and breezy, but if you're in blustery conditions, you're better off to throw a shell on top to keep all the toasty inside. <br />
<br />
I definitely would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a cozy addition to their winter outerwear collection. And don't fret, gentlemen. The version for guys is called the Monkey Man. It's still made of Phur though...<br />
<br />
Adventure on,<br />
